Vulcan
To The Bushfire Dead
Hail to thee O God of Fire
Marshall of greed and human desire
Sacred the name of your burning soul
Our homage to you is paid with coal
All praise to your image flaming bright
Fountain of profit and earthly delight
Stately the prayers we say unto you
As we give benediction with our CO2
Hear now our vows of fealty told
O great god of flames aglow with gold
Supreme our tribute as we stand by your side
We declare you divine with nitrous oxide
Hark to our words O supreme being
Symbol of triumph we all are now seeing
Hallowed your mission on this earthly terrain
Our devotion will reign with a gift of methane
Godly fire that lights our way
Fountain of profit, industrial display
Dance in the wind with your heavenly caper
Our worship a quantum of water vapour
Behold dear godhead let our homage unfold
As your fire signifies vast wealth untold
So pure our love universally seen
For you, thriving image of the Anthropocene
Cyclone
Cyclone.
Can you hear the winds a’calling?
Cyclone
Can you see the trees a’falling?
What you gunna do now man?
Cyclone.
Can you hear the voices crying?
Cyclone
Can you see the people dying?
What you gunna do now man?
Over the mountains the fury rages
Not seen before in history’s pages
Along the streets everybody’s dashing
Scared to death by the lightning flashing
Cyclone.
Can you hear the winds a’calling?
Cyclone
Can you see the trees a’falling?
What you gunna do now man?
Cyclone.
Can you hear the voices crying?
Cyclone
Can you see the people dying?
What you gunna do now man?
Over the plains the air splits asunder
Ten thousand sheep go mad with the thunder
Down by the river the dingoes seek blood
But it’s all washed away now by that flood
Cyclone.
Can you hear the winds a’calling?
Cyclone
Can you see the trees a’falling?
What you gunna do now man?
Cyclone.
Can you hear the voices crying?
Cyclone
Can you see the people dying?
What you gunna do now man?
The world’s unfurled and falling to pieces
Trouble in the air and the pain increases
Stop all the rain and end the pollution
Get it right now or we’ll start a revolution
Cyclone.
Can you hear the winds a’calling?
Cyclone
Can you see the trees a’falling?
What you gunna do now man?
Cyclone.
Can you hear the voices crying?
Cyclone
Can you see the people dying?
What you gunna do now man?
What you gunna do now man?
What you gunna do now man?
Recipe For a Good Man
When I was just
A little bundle of thoughts
My teacher instructed me
To write a recipe
For a good boy.
I had lots of ideas
For ingredients
So I threw in
A large measure of kindness
A pinch of trust
A sprinkle of laughter
And stirred in equal quantities
Of hard work and honesty.
It was so easy.
It was just a picture of me.
But now that I have found
The glass through which
You see darkly,
It is so hard.
I am very confused
Because I always try
To check the evidence.
Most people seem
To approve of liars because
They vote for them.
Warlike men are popular
And when they kill innocents,
Most people seem
To like them even more because
They vote for them
More willingly.
Most people seem
To hate foreigners
And love xenophobes because
They vote for them.
So you see,
The evidence has me completely confused.
Oh damn and blast!
Or words to that effect.
I have found in recent times
Too many ingredients
Which I had never
Previously thought of.
So I give up.
It’s too hard for me.
This empirical approach
Has got me down.
I’ll see if I can find
A wiser man
To give me sound advice.
In the meantime
I can think
Of nothing better to do
Than hustle back
To the beliefs of my childhood.
Apathy
Once I saw a broken man
Lying in the street
Abandoned in defeat.
But I did nothing
For I was prosperous and free.
Once I saw a foreigner
Punished for the crime
Of birth in another clime.
But I did nothing
For I was a patriot and free.
Once I saw a malefactor
Under fierce attack
For the sin of being black.
But I did nothing
For I was fair-skinned and free.
Once I saw a woman
Become a weeping wraith
For the garments of her faith.
But I did nothing
For I was established and free.
Once I saw a prisoner
Held without a trial
A victim of a government file.
But I did nothing
For I was legal and free.
Now I see my nemesis
Threatening my night,
Pounding my door without respite.
But I can do nothing
As my apathy set him free.
Please Let Me Stay
I now a wanderer who does not wish to roam
I now forced to run away and dare not use my name
Home is blown apart for us just like my broken heart
Loved ones vanish all at once, in the choke of war
Even my dog is dead
I been seen in many places by unfamiliar eyes
So may it please you Sir, as I kneel upon your shore,
Please let me stay
I now a wanderer who does not wish to roam
I now forced to run away and dare not use my name
Windows broken by strangers with rat-tat-tatting guns
Triggers pulled by soldiers, all with unknown skins
Even my dog is dead
I not find a friendly face no matter where I am
So may it please you Sir, as I kneel upon your shore,
Please let me stay
I now a wanderer who does not wish to roam
I now forced to run away and dare not use my name
My school and town no longer there, danger everywhere
Old world gone like a daydream melting
Even my dog is dead
I try to be brave so many times, but I only cry instead
So may it please you Sir, as I kneel upon your shore,
Please let me stay
