A battered soul I am
Age has wearied me and the years condemned
No longer moving with the grace of youth
I struggle to reach any destination
Painful too
Even when I cough it hurts
A journey to the bathroom is painful
Although it’s near my bedroom
As for the front door
That is an odyssey
I cannot shower without help
I cannot reach my toenails to cut them
Getting dressed requires an art form rigour
I don’t wear socks
Can’t reach my feet to put them on
I remain seated as long as I can
Getting up is agony
No surprise therefore
I am constantly housebound
With a chronic condition management plan
Life’s hard, a challenge
But there was one day a sudden peace
Two legends came from the mystical Isle of Avalon
Or rather two angels
From the government’s Patient Transport Service
So kind
So caring
So skilful
Transporting me on a stretcher to and from a doctor
And thus I survived the trauma of travel
They will be in my mind for all my days remaining
